Institute of Catalan Studies

Institute of Catalan Studies
The Institute of Catalan Studies (Institut d'Estudis Catalans) was founded in 1907 by the leader of Solidaritat Catalana (Catalan Solidarity), Enric Prat de la Riba. It was an academic body dedicated to scientific research in the fields of Catalan history, literature, archaeology, art history and law. One of its remits was to establish the norms of written Catalan, a task which was undertaken by the engineer-turned-grammarian, Pompeu Fabra. Its activities were interrupted by Francoism, but it secretly resumed them in 1944 under its bestknown post-Civil War head, R.Aramon i Serra. The Institute of Catalan Studies groups together several Catalan academic bodies, and awards a series of annual prizes.
